What you need to know now
The 2021 deadline discussed below has expired. A previous extension does not establish your current filing date; check the current DMCC instructions against your company’s financial year-end.
The original article is preserved below as a historical record. Earlier deadlines, rates, offers and approval statements should not be used as current guidance.
- Identify the year-end and the exact reporting period, not merely the year in a news headline.
- Work backwards from the applicable filing date to allow time for corrections and signatures.
- Retain the portal receipt and resolve any returned submission.
Treat the 2021 notice as a historical reference
A deadline mentioned in a 2021 news item has passed. If the company is reviewing that period now, first establish whether the relevant audit and submission were completed and retain the evidence. Do not infer the filing status from the existence of a signed report alone. A report may have been prepared without the final authority submission being completed, or an application may have been returned for additional information that still needs to be resolved.
Reconstruct the file using dated evidence
Collect the financial statements, audit report, summary sheet, portal acknowledgements and correspondence relating to the period. Identify which versions were final and which were drafts. Where staff or advisers have changed, prepare a brief chronology describing the work performed and any outstanding request. This is more useful than repeatedly forwarding the old deadline article because it establishes the company’s actual position and helps the current adviser identify the specific actions still required.
Handle missing historical records transparently
If the old audit is incomplete, prepare an inventory of the available records and identify gaps early. Bank statements, invoices, contracts, year-end schedules and earlier signed accounts may be needed to support the historical balances. Explain what cannot be located rather than filling gaps with unsupported estimates. The auditor should assess how the available evidence affects the engagement. Management can then agree a realistic work plan and avoid expecting a final report before significant uncertainties have been addressed.
Prevent the same problem in later reporting periods
After resolving the historical position, give the current reporting calendar a named owner and store the required documents in a business-controlled location. Set milestones for preparing the ledger, answering audit queries, approving the statements and checking the submission status. Use the current financial year-end and applicable authority instructions to establish the timetable. The purpose of keeping the 2021 notice is to preserve historical context, not to carry its exceptional dates or assumptions into a present-day compliance decision.
