What you need to know now
The 2018 launch announcement is historical. Eligible visitors now use the operational FTA tourist-refund scheme through Planet.
The original article is preserved below as a historical record. Earlier deadlines, rates, offers and approval statements should not be used as current guidance.
- Launch dates below describe the original rollout.
- Eligibility must be checked against the current scheme.
- A purchase receipt alone does not complete a claim.
Read the launch announcement as history
The original July 2018 report describes approval of the tourist-refund scheme before it became operational. The future-tense statements and early eligibility description belong to that announcement. They should not replace the current FTA service conditions when planning a shopping trip or departure claim.
The scheme now involves participating retailers and the appointed operator. A traveller should confirm the current process rather than assuming any UAE purchase can be refunded. The transaction must be properly recorded and the departure requirements completed; retaining a receipt without completing the scheme process is not the same as a validated claim.
Check participation and details while still in the store
Ask whether the shop participates and can issue the relevant tax-free transaction. Provide the travel document information required by the operator and check that it has been recorded accurately. Correcting an issue promptly is usually more practical than discovering it after leaving the country.
Keep the purchase and traveller records organised. Where several people are shopping together, each claim should be connected to the correct traveller. Do not assume nationality alone determines eligibility; check the present residence, entry-document and other conditions using the current service card or verified operator guidance.
Prepare goods for departure validation
Before travelling to the airport or border, identify the validation facility and keep the purchased goods accessible. Inspection may be required, so understand the process before checking baggage. Carry the document used to enter the UAE and the transaction details requested by the operator.
Separate planning for the journey from planning for the claim. A tight departure schedule can make it difficult to resolve a data error or inspection request. Check the current validation time window and location instructions rather than relying on the list of facilities or rollout dates in an older news report.
Keep confirmation until the refund is received
After successful validation, retain the confirmation and chosen payment method. If the payment is delayed, contact verified scheme support with the transaction reference. Establish whether the issue concerns purchase registration, export validation or payment, as each stage may require different information.
Use the current FTA service page for deductions, minimum purchase conditions and payment limits. These details have changed since the scheme was introduced. The historical article explains the policy’s beginnings; the linked current guide provides the practical starting point for a visitor making a claim today.
