What you need to know now

Corporate Tax support should distinguish the ordinary rate calculation from special regimes, exemptions and reliefs. An early legal text remains useful background, but later decisions can change how it applies.

The original article is preserved below as a historical record. Earlier deadlines, rates, offers and approval statements should not be used as current guidance.

  • An accounting loss or a 0% result does not by itself remove filing obligations.
  • Free Zone status alone does not establish entitlement to a 0% rate.
  • Large multinational groups should separately assess the UAE Domestic Minimum Top-up Tax.
  • In-scope DMTT calculations address the 15% minimum effective rate; this is not a flat replacement of the ordinary rate for every company.

Scope the work around a compliance outcome

A Corporate Tax service engagement should explain what will be delivered: registration support, a computation, relief analysis, return preparation, filing assistance or a defined advisory review. The original 2022 article introduces the legislation, but a practical engagement needs the company’s actual facts and period. Agree the information required from management and who will approve each submission. A broad promise to handle tax is less useful than responsibilities linked to specific deliverables and dates.

Connect accounts to the tax computation

Begin with reliable financial information and reconcile material balances before deciding the tax treatment. Review income, expenses, related-party transactions and relevant elections or reliefs. Keep the reasoning behind adjustments with the computation so another reviewer can follow it. A service provider should identify missing information rather than produce a confident figure from incomplete accounts. An accounting loss or an expected 0% result also needs review of the applicable compliance obligations, not simply an assumption that no return is needed.

Identify specialist questions early

Some matters need a distinct analysis, including Free Zone status, foreign activities, intercompany arrangements and large-group Top-up Tax exposure. Identify these during scoping so the ordinary return process does not overlook them. For example, a company’s location in a Free Zone does not establish that all income qualifies for 0%, and the ordinary headline rate does not settle an in-scope DMTT calculation. Document the facts and the work required rather than applying one general conclusion to every entity.

Retain a usable final file

The completed engagement should leave the business with the approved computation, relevant schedules, explanation of elections, submission evidence and any important outstanding matters. Reconcile payment instructions with the final liability and keep the account acknowledgement. Agree how later correspondence or corrections will be handled, especially if the adviser’s role ends after filing. A clear file supports continuity when staff or advisers change and enables management to understand the tax positions taken without relying entirely on someone else’s email history.

YOUR NEXT STEPS

A practical way forward

  1. 01

    Classify

Document residence, exemption claims and any Free Zone status.

  2. 02

    Calculate

Reconcile the accounts and test applicable reliefs.

  3. 03

    Check wider obligations

Consider intercompany transactions and any multinational-group requirements.

CLEAR ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Can I apply the ordinary threshold to every Free Zone computation?

No. A Qualifying Free Zone Person has a distinct regime; the ordinary calculator is not a substitute for that analysis.

Does the 9% illustration cover Pillar Two?

No. DMTT is a separate calculation for in-scope multinational groups.
