What you need to know now
Electronic tourist refunds are an established scheme. This earlier announcement should be read as background to the current traveller process.
The original article is preserved below as a historical record. Earlier deadlines, rates, offers and approval statements should not be used as current guidance.
- Check transaction details before departure.
- The refund is subject to scheme deductions.
- Resolve errors with the retailer or operator promptly.
Electronic processing still depends on the purchase
Electronic records make the tourist-refund process easier to track, but the underlying purchase and traveller information still matter. Check that the retailer participates and that the transaction has been captured using the correct travel document. A card receipt, emailed invoice or photograph of the goods is not interchangeable with the scheme record. The original short announcement is retained as history; today’s claim should follow the operational scheme rather than its launch description.
Review the digital transaction before departure
Keep the purchase reference and compare the details with the invoice while the retailer can still investigate a discrepancy. Check the traveller’s identity information and the goods recorded. If the transaction is missing, contact the retailer or operator promptly with the receipt and purchase details. Do not assume that a successful card payment means a tourist-refund transaction was created, or that an electronic record removes the possibility of an eligibility or inspection question.
Complete the export-validation process
Plan validation around the actual departure arrangements and keep the goods accessible if inspection is requested. Follow the official instructions for the relevant point of departure and the steps shown by the operator. Electronic processing does not remove the traveller’s part in demonstrating the goods are leaving under the scheme conditions. If a kiosk directs the traveller to staff, treat that instruction as part of the process rather than repeatedly attempting the same transaction without resolving the issue.
Track the refund separately from validation
Retain the confirmation and the details of the refund method selected. When checking an outstanding payment, use the scheme reference and relevant travel information instead of initiating a duplicate purchase record. The amount returned can differ from the VAT shown on the original receipt because the scheme has deductions. Use the current official service information for those amounts. This electronic tourist route is also separate from a business’s VAT return, so the two records should not be confused.
